Individual Matching Gifts. Each employee can request matching gifts for personal donations to nonprofits.
Fundraising Matches. If an employee participates in a fundraising walk/run/bike/etc., he or she can request matching funds on all money raised for the organization.

Volunteer Grants:

If BHP employees prefer to give their time, BHP supports their volunteerism by providing grants to nonprofits where employees volunteer regularly.

For every hour a BHP employee volunteers, the company donates $16 to the organization. Of course, there’s a minimum and maximum amount the company will donate per employee, but this can be a great source of fundraising for organizations with a large volunteer base.

Halliburton employees can participate in three different matching gift programs:

Matches to Higher Education. Halliburton provides a 2:1 match on employee donations to colleges & universities.
Matches to K-12 Schools. Halliburton provides 1:1 match on employee donations to primary and secondary schools (max $500 annually per employee).
Matches to Other Nonprofits. During Halliburton’s “Giving Choices” campaign, the company provides a 10% match on donations made to nearly any 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Phillips 66

Phillips 66 is an American multinational energy company headquartered in the Houston area. The Fortune 500 company offers a generous corporate philanthropy program.

Matching Gifts:

Phillips 66 matches donations to most nonprofits at a 1:1 ratio. Their maximum match amount for active full- and part-time employees is $15,000, while retirees are matched up to $7,500 annually.

Volunteer Grants:

Phillips 66 offers two types of volunteer grant programs for employees, their spouses, and retirees:

Individual Volunteer Grants. For every 20 hours an individual volunteers, they receive a volunteer grant of $500 for the organization. Each individual can request up to four of these grants each year.
Team Volunteer Grants. When teams of four or more employees volunteer together for a total of 40 combined hours, the company provides a grant of $1,000.

ConocoPhillips

With over $230 million a year in revenue, ConocoPhillips is the fourth largest company in the United States (according to Forbes). Along with this financial success, the company has made corporate philanthropy a big component of its core values.

Matching Gifts:

ConocoPhillips matches donations from employees and retirees at a 1:1 rate. Employees can request up to $10,000 in matching funds annually while retirees are eligible to request up to $5,000 annually.

Volunteer Grants:

ConocoPhillips also supports organizations where individuals or groups of employees volunteer. Individuals can request grants of $500 after volunteering for 20 hours or grants of $1,000 after volunteering with a nonprofit for 40 hours.

If groups of employees volunteer together, ConocoPhillips provides team volunteer grants. If you have supporters who work at ConocoPhillips, make sure to ask them to grab their colleagues to come out and volunteer together. If a group of four or more ConocoPhillips employees volunteer together for a total of at least 40 hours, your nonprofit can earn a grant of $1,000.

BP

BP is consistently ranked on our list of top corporate giving programs and recognized for having perhaps the best employee giving program.

BP has a matching gifts program where they will match employee donations from $25 to $5,000 at a 1:1 ratio.

The nonprofits BP will match donations to include, but are not limited to:

Educational institutions (K-12 included)
Health & human welfare service organizations
Arts and cultural organizations
Development, civic, and community organizations
Environmental and conservation organizations

BP also has a dollars for doers program where they will donate up to 10 dollars per volunteer hour after an employee has volunteered a minimum of 25 hours. The company will also match the amount of money an employee has raised at an event for nonprofits!

Lastly, BP’s Fabric of America program allows employees to designate $300 in grant money to the nonprofit of their choice, in addition to all of the other matching gift and volunteer matching programs BP has in place.

Volunteer Grants (aka Dollars for Doers) programs are an up and coming form of corporate giving. Unlike matching gift programs, in which corporations match donations from employees, these programs match volunteer effort from employees with corporate donations.

If you haven’t been following Double the Donation’s blog, catch up on part 1 of this topic where we introduced 10 companies which provide grants of at least $15 per volunteer hour.

Due to the positive feedback we received from readers, we’re doing a followup post. So without further ado, here are 10 additional companies which have truly embraced Dollars for Doers programs with generous grants per hour volunteered.

Companies with Volunteer Grants Greater than $15 per hour:

Travelers Company

Travelers offers two types of employee giving programs.

Matching Gifts of Money
Matching Gifts of Time

Through the “Matching Gifts of Money” program, the company doubles donations made by employees to nearly all nonprofits.

Through the “Matching Gifts of Time” program, the company directs a $500 grant to nonprofit organizations when an employee has volunteered for at least 24 hours with the organization ($20 per hour).

Macy’s

Whereas most companies apply very few restrictions to their volunteer grant programs, Macy’s only provides volunteer grants to educational institutions (including K-12). Through Macy’s “Earnings for Learnings” program, the company provides a $250 grant to schools where employees volunteer for at least 15 hours ($17 per hour).

Macy’s also offers a very generous matching gift program where the company will match each employee’s donations up to $22,500 annually to nearly all nonprofits.

Kimberly-Clark

While Johnson & Johnson made our 2012 ranking of top corporate employee giving programs, Kimberly-Clark isn’t far behind. The company matches donations to nearly all nonprofits up to $10,000 per employee per year.

The Kimberly-Clark Foundation also recognizes the volunteer efforts of employees and their spouses or domestic partners. The company provides $500 grants to nonprofits where employees / spouses / domestic partners volunteer for at least 30 hours in a year ($17 per hour).

PNC Financial

Through PNC’s “Grants for Great Hours” volunteer grant program, employees who volunteer for 40+ hours with a nonprofit early education program earn a grant of $1,000 for that organization ($25 per hour).

Additionally, PNC offers a less restrictive matching gift program where the company matches donations dollar for dollar to nearly every nonprofit and school.

Amgen

The Amgen Foundation supports volunteer efforts by providing grants to organizations where employees volunteer. Once an Amgen employee volunteers for 15 hours in a year with a nonprofit, he or she can request a $500 grant ($33 per hour).

Full time employees are eligible for up to $2,000 annually in grants for their nonprofit while part time staff can earn up to $1,000 in grants annually.

Amgen also matches employee contributions of up to $20,000 per employee annually to nearly all nonprofits.

PPG Industries

PPG Industries offers one of the most generous volunteer grant programs. Through PPG’s “Grant Incentives for Volunteerism by PPG Employees & Retirees (GIVE)” program, after an employee or retiree volunteers for 10 hours with a nonprofit organization, he or she can request a $500 grant for the organization ($50 per hour).

As an added bonus, if an individual also serves on the nonprofit’s board of directors; the company will double the grant and award $1,000 to the nonprofit ($100 per volunteer hour).

PPG Industries also matches donations to select organizations.

Devon Energy

Whereas most companies base their volunteer grants off the annual number of hours volunteered, Devon Energy provides grants for regular volunteering during shorter time periods. The company offers two ways employees can request $250 grants ($20 per hour) for their organization:

Six hours of volunteering per month for two months.
Three hours of volunteering per month for four months.

Soros Fund Management

Chevron Corporation

Through Chevron’s “Grant for Good” program, the company provides grants as a way to recognize employees and volunteers who volunteer on a regular basis.

After employees volunteer for 20 hours with a single nonprofit, the organization can receive a $500 grant. Each employee or retiree is eligible to obtain two $500 grants per calendar year for either a single nonprofit or two different nonprofits.

Chevron also doubles donations made by employees and retirees through the company’s Humankind Program.

Pfizer

Pfizer encourages regular volunteerism among employees and retirees. The company provides $1,000 volunteer grants to organizations where employees volunteer on a regular basis.

After an employee or retiree volunteers for six hours per month for six consecutive months, he or she can submit a request for a $1,000 volunteer grant.

The company also matches donations made by employees and retirees up to $5,000 annually.

We decided to create a list of some of those companies in the Raleigh, NC that offer these programs. Nonprofits can double their donations from donors who work for companies offering matching gifts.

Caterpillar Inc. will match donations up to $2,000 for every employee. Not all institutions are eligible, however.

John Deere & Company will match employee gifts between $50 and $1,000. At one point the company only matched donations to institutions of higher education but since 2014 rolled out an enhanced matching gift program where John Deere will now match donations to a wide range of 501(c)(3) nonprofits including but not limited to:

Kellogg’s

Through Kellogg’s Cares, the company provides volunteer grants to organizations where employees and retirees volunteer on a regular basis.

Kellogg provides a $100 donation to organizations where an employee or retiree volunteers a minimum of 10 hours during a 12-month period. Each individual is eligible to request up to $500 per year.

LexisNexis

LexisNexis will match up to $250 a year to most charitable organizations. Part-time employees are eligible.

Microsoft

As one of the most generous corporate philanthropists in not only Seattle but in the world, Microsoft offers a variety of employee giving programs.

Through its employee match program, the company doubles employee donations to almost all nonprofits. Microsoft has increased its matching gift maximum from an already impressive $12,000 to a tremendous $15,000.

To make things even better, Microsoft also has a volunteer grant program where the company donates $25 to organizations for every hour its employees volunteer—no minimum number of hours required! Additionally, the company provides each new employee with a small grant to allocate to a nonprofit of his or her choosing.

Wells Fargo

As a top Fortune 500 company, Wells Fargo & Company has a strong presence in Seattle and many other major US cities.

While Wells Fargo only matches donations to educational institutions, its $2,000 limit for each employee can still increase donors’ impact on causes that they care about. The minimum matched by Wells Fargo is $25, and they’ll match donations at a 1:1 ratio. In other words, eligible donations can be doubled!

Plus, Wells Fargo also offers a volunteer grant program, with no minimum number of hours required! Each year, Wells Fargo awards more than $500,000 in volunteer grants, making a major difference for eligible nonprofits.

QuoteWizard

While QuoteWizard has only a little over 100 employees, it’s a well-known company in Seattle. As a way of giving back to the Seattle community, it offers a matching gift program where donations are offered at a 3:1 match. In other words, eligible donations can be quadrupled!

The company matches donations anywhere from $25 to $10,000 to most nonprofits. Since its inception, the company has donated over $400,000 to nonprofit organizations and is an avid supporter of the Seattle community.

Boeing

Boeing, a well-known company in Seattle, offers a matching gift program for employees who give to charitable organizations. Even after moving its headquarters to Chicago, Boeing remains the largest private employer in the city.

The company will match gifts between $25 and $10,000. While charitable donations made by current employees can be matched at a 1:1 ratio, donations made by retired employees can be matched at a .5:1 ratio.

Boeing also provides grants to nonprofits where employees donate their time. The company provides a $10 grant for every 10 hours of volunteering, with a max of $10,000. To qualify, employees must volunteer at least 25 hours. Boeing also offers team volunteer grants, awarded to groups of employees who volunteer for nonprofits. The gift is scaled by the number of employees in the group.

Intermec Foundation

With a 5:1 match on donations from employees and directors, the Intermec Foundation offers one of the most generous matching gift programs in the corporate world, let alone Seattle.

The Intermec Foundation will provide up to $75,000 in matching funds per employee per year and up to $150,000 in matching funds per director per year.

For example, let’s say an Intermec Foundation employee donates $2,000 to an eligible nonprofit. Assuming the individual submits a match request, the Intermec Foundation will provide a matching gift of an additional $10,000, totaling $12,000. A program like this has the power to completely change a nonprofit’s growth trajectory!

Liberty Mutual Group

The Liberty Mutual Group provides matching funds to select types of organizations during Give with Liberty, the company’s annual giving campaign.

Through online pledging and payroll deduction, Liberty Mutual matches 50 cents on every dollar (i.e. a .5:1 ratio) that employees donate to a wide variety of social service nonprofits. Their payroll giving campaign is only a portion of the company’s matching gift program.

Plus, Liberty Mutual also offers volunteer grants for 3 employees annually. Each of these 3 selected employees receives $10,000 to donate to a nonprofit of their choosing. Nonprofit volunteers must register for this award, known as the Chairman’s Community Service Award.

Alaska Airlines

Alaska Airlines works with nonprofit groups in the areas of health and human services, arts and cultural programs, as well as education, environmental, and civic organizations.

They will match gifts with a minimum of $50 and a maximum of $4,000 at a 1:1 ratio. Like many organizations, their match request process is done electronically, which speeds up the process.

Alaska Air also gives organizations volunteer grants of $10 per hour for up to $1,000, after an employee volunteers at that organization for a minimum of 5 hours.

Specific grant amounts vary between $250-$1,000 and are based upon the number of hours and type of volunteer work performed. Each employee must volunteer for a minimum of 40 hours before being eligible for a volunteer grant.

ExxonMobil

In addition to ExxonMobil’s generous matching gift program to higher education and arts & cultural organizations, Exxon Mobil also offers two types of volunteer grant programs:

ExxonMobil Individual Volunteer Grants

Spouses and dependent children (ages 12-25) of both employees and retirees are also eligible to participate and request volunteer grants for their volunteer hours.

ExxonMobil Team Volunteer Grants

Thomson Reuters also offers a very generous volunteer grants program! An organization is eligible for a $500 grant from Thomson Reuters after an employee volunteers 20 hours in a year.

State Street Corporation

The State Street Corporation has one of the most generous employee giving programs in the game. It consists of an individual matching gift program, a fundraising match program, and a volunteer grant program.

In terms of the matching gift program, State Street will match any employee’s donation up to $5,000 to nearly all nonprofit organizations. And depending upon the seniority of the employee, he or she could be eligible for a match of as much as $35,000 per year.

California is home to many of the country’s most socially responsible companies. Because of this, California nonprofits are well-positioned to take advantage of matching gift programs.

As the 17th largest metropolitan area in the United States, San Diego is home to many leading companies. Nonprofits in San Diego can benefit from increased revenue by focusing on employee matching gift programs. Qualcomm also provides grants worth $250 whenever an employee volunteers for at least 15 hours. Employees can apply for additional grants for the same or a different charitable organization once they volunteer for another 15 hours.

However, the company has a combined limit for each employee for both their matching gift program and their volunteer grant program. Depending on the employee’s level (e.g. associate, director, etc. ), the limit ranges from $1,000 to $5,000 per year.

2. Kaiser Permanente

Kaiser Permanente employs more than 7,000 individuals in the San Diego metropolitan area.

Its matching gift program varies region-by-region, but fortunately for San Diego employees and nonprofits, they do offer a match program. Every year, Kaiser Permanente offers an employee giving campaign around September or November. The program is open to full-time and part-time employees. However, retirees are not eligible.

During the annual giving campaign, they match employee donations to most nonprofits. Match amounts range from $25 up to $5,000 at a 1:1 ratio.

3. Sempra Energy

Sempra Energy employs more than 4,500 individuals in San Diego and serves approximately 3.7 million customers in southern California, making it the largest utility provider in the San Diego area.

The company is a strong supporter of local nonprofits and matches donations to most organizations. Donations eligible for matches range from $25 to $2,500. The program is open to both full-time employees and part-time employees.

Also, Sempra Energy offers two types of volunteer grant programs:

Individual volunteer grants. Employees who volunteer at least 10 hours with a nonprofit or a school may request up to $1,000, depending on the number of hours volunteered.
Season of Giving team volunteer grants. During the holiday season, when teams of employees volunteer together, they can request a Season of Giving grant.

4. LPL Financial Services

LPL Financial offers a matching gift program for its financial advisors. Through LPL Financial’s program, full-time financial advisors can request matches for donations made to most nonprofits. They can request up to $500 in matching gift funds each year.

5. United Technologies Corporation (UTC) (Now known as Raytheon)

In 2012, Goodrich merged with United Technologies, and as part of the merger process, the two companies combined their employee giving programs. Then more recently United Technologies joined Raytheon through a merger.

UTC used to match employee donations to most nonprofits. Each employee could request up to $10,000 in matching gift funds each year, as long as the request is made within 12 months of the initial donation. Now the program is under Raytheon’s employee giving program.

UTC also offers a volunteer grant program. When employees volunteer a minimum of 60 hours at eligible nonprofits, they can request a $250 donation. Each employee can submit grant requests for up to two nonprofits per year.
