IBM matches donations made by both current employees and retirees.IBM is an Atlanta matching gift company that matches donations with either monetary and equipment grants.

The matching gift ratio varies depending upon whether it’s an employee or retiree making the donation. For instance, IBM will match eligible contributions of up to $5,000 per institution per current employee at a 1:1 ratio. For retired employees, they’ll match at a .5:1 ratio.

Delta matches up to $5,000 annually per eligible individual at a dollar-for-dollar rate. This is up from a 50% match on up to $2,000 annually just a few years ago.

The program is offered to full-time employees, part-time employees, and retirees.

AT&T

AT&T, an Atlanta matching gift company, offers a Cause Cards program as a way to match donations.AT&T is the largest provider of mobile and fixed telephone systems in the United States. As of 2018, it’s the ninth-largest company in the U.S. by total revenue.

While AT&T doesn’t offer a matching gift program, the company supports organizations that full-time employees are passionate about through its Cause Cards program.

Cause Cards are grants from AT&T given to eligible charities recommended by employees. All employees that participate in the annual Employee Giving Campaign are eligible to receive a Cause Card.

United Parcel Service (UPS)

UPS, which was originally an Atlanta matching gift company, no longer offers a match program.We get more questions from our nonprofit clients asking us about UPS’s matching gift program than any other company. Unfortunately, this confusion arises from the fact that UPS is still listed on the majority of the random lists of matching gift companies found on various websites.

UPS does not offer an employee matching gift program. Upon hearing this news, our team reached out to the UPS Foundation for confirmation and received the following response:

“The UPS Foundation formerly offered a gift matching program for educational and cultural organizations. However, on February 20, 2009, UPS’s Board of Trustees approved the action to suspend the Gift Matching Program due to the economic climate. At this time, there are no current plans to restart the program.”

While they don’t match employee donations, they are avid supporters of their local communities. For instance, in recent years, they’ve invested over 1.8 million volunteer hours and over $100 million to charitable organizations.

Equifax

Equifax, an Atlanta matching gift company, matches donations from $50 to $5,000.Equifax matches employee donations to nearly all 501(c)(3) organizations. McDonald’s Corporation

McDonald's, a company that matches gifts made to elementary schools, offers the program to both full-time and part-time corporate employees.As one of the largest employers in the world, McDonald’s matching gift program has the potential to impact schools across the United States. In addition to its work with the Ronald McDonald House, the company has a generous philanthropy program.

The company will match corporate employee donations a year to elementary schools. While full-time and part-time corporate employees are eligible to participate, franchise employees are not eligible.

Additionally, McDonald’s will match up to $5,000 per employee per year and $10,000 per vice president and board of director member per year. There are a few more restrictions surrounding eligible employees, so make sure to do a bit more research on the company before submitting a request.

Texas Instruments

Texas Instruments is a company that matches gifts made to elementary schools and encourages its employees to volunteer.Not only does Texas Instruments produce classroom technology, but it also supports elementary schools with its matching gift program. Plus, TI stands out for doing an exceptional job of notifying employees and retirees of its programs.

In addition to its matching gift program, TI encourages its employees to volunteer. After an employee volunteers 20 hours with an eligible educational institution (K-12 included), they can request a $250 grant for the school. Employees and retirees can request up to four volunteer grants (i.e. $1,000) each year.

The Walt Disney Corporation

The Walt Disney Corporation, a company that matches gifts made to elementary schools, also offers a generous volunteer grant programs.The Walt Disney Corporation will match donations to elementary schools made by current full-time employees, part-time employees, and retirees of between $25 and $25,000 annually. The company matches to all K-12 schools.

Additionally, Walt Disney offers a volunteer grant program, called Disney VoluntEARS. Once an employee volunteers a minimum of 10 hours, they can request a grant. Like most corporate giving programs, the amount received depends on the number of volunteer hours. In other words, 10-24 hours equals a $100 grant, 25-49 hours represents a $250 grant, and so on. Once an employee exceeds 150 hours, they receive a $2,000 grant.

Also, the company recognizes exceptional individual volunteers with its “VoluntEARS of the Year” grants of $2,500.

However, Walt Disney’s grant request process is slightly different from other companies. Employees register their donations online and then email the certificate to the nonprofit. The certificate includes a “Gift ID” which the nonprofit uses to claim the matching gift funds.

While AT&T doesn’t offer an official “matching gift program,” the company supports the organizations which employees are passionate about through its Cause Cards program.

Cause Cards are grants from the AT&T Foundation given to eligible charities recommended by employees. All employees that participate in the annual Employee Giving Campaign will be eligible to receive a Cause Card.

Employee pledges will be eligible for a Cause Card on a sliding scale based on a percentage of total giving. These Cause Cards are expected to range from $25 – $250. Once employees make a recommendation for an eligible charity to receive a Cause Card, they are notified of the value of the grant and the deadline by which they need to redeem it.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. is the largest bank in the United States based on assets ($2 trillion, according to Forbes magazine).

JPMorgan offers not only a robust matching gift program on a monetary basis (donations from $1 to $1,000) but also a very comprehensive volunteer grant program that includes both individual and group volunteers.

Individual Volunteer Grants apply to individuals who volunteer on a regular basis and are eligible to request volunteer grants. Team Volunteer Grants apply to teams of three or more employees or retirees who volunteer together and are eligible for team volunteer grants based on the combined volunteer hours.

Capital Group Companies is a financial investment services company with assets upward of $1 trillion. With about 7,000 employees worldwide, TCGC offers a very generous matching gift program, providing a 2:1 match on donations anywhere from $25-$5,000. That’s essentially tripling a donation!

TCGC also offers a volunteer grant program that encourages employees to volunteer at least 10 hours with an organization, after which it will provide a grant of $10 per hour for up to 50 hours.

Wells Fargo, which acquired Wachovia, has reported revenue of over $86 billion. Wells Fargo also boasts a massive employee base, at just about 265,000. Wells Fargo matches, dollar-for-dollar, donations to accredited public or private educational institutions and educational foundations, anywhere from $25-$2,000.

Possibly even more impressive, though, is Wells Fargo’s volunteer grants program. It annually awards more than $500,000 in volunteer grants to organizations employees volunteer for in their communities. Directing Donors to Matching Gift Forms | 4 Standard Methods

Does your organization have a strategy in place to maximize fundraising from employee matching gift programs? If not, taking donors and members to company specific matching gift forms is a great place to start.

Directing donors and members directly to matching gift forms is far more effective than suggesting they “reach out to HR”. In fact, it’s one of the most effective ways your organization can increase fundraising from corporate matching gift programs.

At Double the Donation, we utilize four different approaches to directing your organizations donors and members to the forms they need to submit matching gift requests. We know each method isn’t created equal, so we’ve prioritized the information we provide to donors to maximize the likelihood they’ll submit a matching gift request.

Direct Donors to the Electronic Matching Gift Submission Process (1st Preference)

Many of the largest companies offer an electronic matching gift submission process. While a few companies have developed their own proprietary process, the majority of companies contract the matching gift administration process out to a vendor (ex. Easymatch, Cybergrant, etc.)

Fortunately for nonprofits, in the majority of instances the electronic login page is actually publicly available on a website which anyone can access. We direct donors to the login page where they enter their username and password and then proceed through the matching gift submission process.

Rationale: Your donors are already online and looking for company specific matching gift information. They’re most likely to submit a match request electronically, especially since once at the proper location, it only takes a few minutes.

While more and more companies continue to migrate over to an electronic submission process, many still require donors to print out / fill out a paper matching gift form. In many cases the form is posted out on a publicly accessible website so we direct donors to the company page where the matching form can be downloaded.

The two possible approaches were for us to download these forms and host them on Double the Donation’s servers or direct donors to the actual company page where the forms are hosted. After testing both strategies, we ultimately decided on the latter

Rationale: While directing donors to a company page to download the form involves an extra step, we see it as the preferred method for providing donors with the form. It ensures they have access to the most up-to-date form as well as reassures them the matching program is still active form.

Provide Donors with the Matching Gift Form on our Servers – (3rd Preference)

If a company requires employees to submit a paper matching gift form, we do our best to provide the donor with a copy of the form. If it isn’t posted publicly on the company’s website, we request that the company provide us with a copy of the form.

In these cases we host the form on our server (typically as a PDF) so your donors can easily download it.

Rationale: Providing a copy of the form enables a donor to submit the matching gift request without having to dig around for additional information.

Redirect Donors to the Company Intranet or HR / Community Relations Contact

Unfortunately we don’t always have the best access to the matching gift forms your donors need. Typically this is for one of the following two reasons:

  1. There’s an electronic submission process which can only be accessed over the company intranet.
  2. The form is posted on the company intranet, but the company didn’t want to share a copy with Double the Donation.

In these cases we typically redirect donors to the company intranet. If it’s an online submission process, we notify the donor of this and ask them to go to a specific location on the intranet or to search for “matching gifts.” If there’s a paper form, we provide it via a link or host the form on our servers.

Rationale: While this is less than ideal, just telling donors “Hey, company XYZ will match your donation up to $5,000 and your organization is eligible” increases the likelihood they’ll log into the company intranet to retrieve the form.
