Our program prepares preschool-age children from low-income communities with the early literacy skills they need to enter kindergarten and become successful readers; thereby breaking the cycle of illiteracy and poverty. Currently, Ready Readers has 500 volunteers who read weekly to 10,000 preschool-age children from low-income communities who attend 180 early childhood centers in the St. Louis area. Ready Readers is a unique and proven program that galvanizes a diverse group of St. Louis community members to inspire our lowest income children to love books and reading. The same trained, community volunteer reads high-quality children's literature and provides an activity weekly to the same classroom of preschool children, allowing strong relationships to form. Every 4-6 weeks, the volunteer reads and gives each child and their teacher a new, personalized copy of high-quality children's book. We give away over 65,000 books each year!
