Matching Gift Participation Rates

Has your organization ever taken a look at which companies are consistently providing matching gift donations to your organization?

If you have, you may notice that a disproportionate number of matching gifts come from a select few companies.

Survey Results | Participation Varies Widely by Company:

The Chronicle of Philanthropy released a report entitled “How America’s Biggest Companies Give” which was compiled from their Corporate Giving Survey.

In this survey, America’s largest companies provided employee participation rates for their matching gift programs. The below table breaks down employee participation rates for many large employers.*

Key Insights on Matching Gift Participation Rates:

Insight #1: 65% of Microsoft employees request a match from the company compared to less than 15% for Xerox, Dell, and Verizon. This is a direct result of Microsoft being one of the best at communicating matching gift information to employees.

Insight #2: Pfizer leads companies in the pharmaceutical industry with over 30% of employees participating in the company’s matching gift program.

Insight #3: Matching gift programs are widely utilized by employees in the financial services sector. American Express leads the pack with 70% of employees requesting the company match at least one charitable donation.

Insight #4: Based on this sample of companies, the consumer goods sector has the lowest employee participation rates. Of the companies that provided data, Johnson & Johnson leads the sector with 25% of employees having one or more donations matched by the company.

 

Impact on your Organization’s Matching Gift Revenue: Home Depot vs. Coca-Cola:

For instance, both Home Depot (~13K Atlanta employees) and Coca-Cola (~5K Atlanta employees) are headquartered in Atlanta and offer similar matching gift programs.

One would expect Atlanta based nonprofit organizations to receive a significant number of matching gift donations from each of these companies. Unfortunately that doesn’t appear to be the case. The majority of nonprofits we’ve spoken to self-report far more matching donations from Coca-Cola compared to Home Depot each year. **

 

So what causes this discrepancy?

Organizations typically explain this phenomenon by talking about the number of employees each company has in the area. While it’s true that a company with a major presence in a city is more likely to provide a larger number of matching gifts, there’s an even more important factor.

How well a company internally promotes matching gifts dictates how likely an employee is to know about the program and submit matching gift requests.

We know it doesn’t take a genius to come up with the above statement, but it’s true. So many employees at companies with matching gift programs have no idea their employer offers a program. If an employee / donor lacks knowledge of their company program, there’s no way they’ll submit a matching gift request.

 

Closing the Gap:

Although your organization can’t change how widely companies promote matching gifts to their entire employee base, you can greatly influence the percentage of your donors who submit matching gift requests.

If you raise awareness and make it easy for your donors / their spouses to submit matching gifts, you can increase matching revenue.

We recommend nonprofits promote matching gifts in three locations:

  1. In the donation process
  2. Across your website
  3. In your communications

If you effectively promote employee matching gifts to your donors, you can overcome low participation rates.

Have Retirees who Volunteer? Receive Grants from their Former Employers!

Volunteer grants for retirees are one of the most overlooked sources of fundraising for nonprofits. But given that retirees are the most committed volunteers for many organizations, there’s value in promoting volunteer grants to these supporters.

At Double the Donation, we help nonprofits raise more money from employee matching gift and volunteer grant programs. While we’re the first to admit that many company programs are geared exclusively towards current employees, some companies extend their grant programs to retirees who volunteer on a regular basis.

Companies with Volunteer Grant Programs for Retirees

Chevron:chevron-matching-gifts

Like most major oil and gas producers, Chevron has generous employee giving programs. One aspect that differentiates the company from its peers is that its matching gift and volunteer grants are not limited to current employees. Retirees are also eligible to submit grant requests for much of their philanthropic giving.

Each employee or retiree who volunteers for at least 20 hours in a year can request a grant for $500. At $25 per hour, that makes Chevron’s volunteer grant program one of the top ones in the world. And to make it even better, each individual can request up to two grants (either for the same organization or different organizations) for a total of $1,000 annually.

PNM Resources:pnm-volunteering

PNM Resources, which stands for Public Service Company of New Mexico, is an energy holding company headquartered in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The company owns both PNM and Texas-New Mexico Power (TNMP). As a long-time employer in both markets, the company has a strong passion for giving back.

In addition to PNM Resources’ matching gift program, the company also encourages employees and retirees to volunteer with nonprofit organizations by providing financial grants to the organizations as a way to recognize volunteerism. There are three tiers of grants:

  • 12 volunteer hours = $100 grant
  • 25 volunteer hours = $200 grant
  • 25 volunteer hours and employee or retiree serves on the board of directors = $500 grant

Aetna:aetna matching gifts

As one of the nation’s largest insurers, Aetna has a presence in nearly all states. Given its size and scope, it’s great to hear that the company offers multiple employee giving programs.

In addition to Aetna’s matching gift program where the company matches donations to nearly any nonprofit, Aetna also provides grants to nonprofits when active employees and retirees volunteer. Once an individual volunteers for at least 20 hours, Aetna will provide a $300 grant to the nonprofit where the employee or retiree volunteered. Coming out to $15 per hour, Aetna’s program is on the upper end of volunteer grant rates!

Pfizer:pfizer volunteer grants

Not many companies provide volunteer grants of $1,000 but Pfizer is one of them. In addition to matching up to $5,000 in employee donations at a 1:1 ratio and matching retiree contributions at a 50% ratio, the company also is a huge advocate for ongoing volunteerism.

At the heart of Pfizer’s volunteer grant program is a goal of encouraging regular and long-term volunteerism. Pfizer provides $1,000 grants to nonprofits where employees and retirees volunteer as long as the following requirements are met:

  • Volunteer for at least 6 month
  • Serve an average of six hours per month for a total of 72 hours in a calendar year

IBM – International Business Machines:ibm-volunteer-grants

As one of the largest and most respected companies in the world, it’s no surprise that IBM also excels in the corporate philanthropy space. In addition to providing matching gifts to thousands of organizations which employees donate to each year, International Business Machines also offers multiple forms of volunteer grants for both current employees and retirees.

Specifics vary, but IBM employees and retirees who volunteer for a minimum of eight hours a month for five months can apply for cash grants of up to $1,000 or technology grants worth up to $3,500 for their favorite nonprofit.

Los Angeles Companies that Match Employee Donations

Quick Statistics on Los Angeles Matching Gift Companies

Did you know that many California public schools are now asking parents of students to donate upwards of $400 per student, per year? Due to the wealth of companies in Los Angeles focusing their philanthropic efforts on educational institutions, many nonprofits and K-12 public schools are raising tens of thousands of dollars annually via matching gifts.

  • In 2012, 53 California-based companies graced the Fortune 500 list, 4 of which are based in Los Angeles.
  • 65% of Fortune 500 companies offer matching gift programs.
  • 40% of Fortune 500 companies offer volunteer grant programs.

Major Companies in Los Angeles with Employee Giving Programs

AT&T matches employee giftsAT&T

AT&T is the largest provider of mobile and fixed telephone systems in the United States. As of 2016, it is the seventh largest company in the U.S. by total revenue.

While AT&T doesn’t offer a “matching gift program” the company supports the organizations which employees are passionate about through its Cause Cards program.

Cause Cards are grants from the AT&T Foundation given to eligible charities recommended by employees. All employees that participate in the annual Employee Giving Campaign will be eligible to receive a Cause Card.

Eligible nonprofits include:

  • Educational institutions (K-12 and higher education)
  • Arts & cultural organizations
  • Environmental organizations
  • Civic and community organizations
  • Health and human service organizations
  • And many other 501(c)3 organizations

Employee pledges will be eligible for a Cause Card on a sliding scale based on a percentage of total giving. These Cause Cards are expected to range from $25 – $250. Employees will be notified of the value of the Cause Card and the deadline by which they need to redeem it by making a recommendation for an AT&T Foundation grant to an eligible 501(c)(3) charity of their choice.

JP Morgan matches employee donationsJPMorgan Chase & Co.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. is the largest bank in the United States based on assets ($2 trillion, according to Forbes magazine.)

JPMorgan offers not only a robust matching gift program on a monetary basis (donations from $25 to $1,000), but a very comprehensive volunteer grant program that includes both individual and group volunteers.

Individual Volunteer Grants – Individuals who volunteer on a regular basis are eligible to request volunteer grants. Amounts are as follows:

  • 15 – 24 volunteer hours –> $150 grants
  • 25 – 49 volunteer hours –> $250 grants
  • 50 – 74 volunteer hours –> $500 grants
  • 75 – 99 volunteer hours –> $750 grants
  • 100 or more volunteer hours –> $1,000 grants

Team Volunteer Grants – Teams of three or more employees or retirees who volunteer together are eligible for team volunteer grants based on the combined volunteer hours. Amounts are as follows:

  • 5 – 24 combined volunteer hours =  $150 grants
  • 25 – 49 combined volunteer hours = $250 grants
  • 50 – 74 combined volunteer hours = $500 grants
  • 75 – 99 combined volunteer hours = $750 grants
  • 100 or more combined volunteer hours = $1,000 grants

Capital Group Companies Matches Donations 2:1The Capital Group Companies

The Capital Group Companies is a financial investment services company with assets upward of $1 trillion. With about 7,000 employees worldwide, TCGC offers a very generous matching gift program, providing a 2:1 match on donations anywhere from $100-$5,000. That’s essentially tripling a donation!

TCGC also offers a volunteer grant program that encourages employees to volunteer at least 10 hours with an organization, after which it will provide a grant of $10 per hour for up to 50 hours.

Wells Fargo Donation MatchingWells Fargo & Company

Wells Fargo, which acquired Wachovia, is the fourth largest bank in the United States, with reported revenue of over $86 billion. Wells Fargo also boasts a massive employee base, at just about 265,000. Wells Fargo matches, dollar-for-dollar, donations to accredited public or private educational institutions and educational foundations, anywhere from $25-$6,500.

Possibly even more impressive, though, is Wells Fargo’s volunteer grants program. It annually awards more than $500,000 in volunteer grants to organizations employees volunteer for in their communities. There isn’t a minimum number of hours required or a specific donation amount awarded, but employees apply directly through the Wells Fargo Foundation.

10 Additional Companies Providing Grants of Greater than 15 Dollars per Employee Volunteer Hour (Part 2)

Volunteer Grants (aka Dollars for Doers) programs are an up and coming form of corporate giving. Unlike matching gift programs, in which corporations match donations from employees, these programs match volunteer effort from employees with corporate donations.

If you haven’t been following Double the Donation’s blog, catch up on part 1 of this topic where we introduced 10 companies which provide grants of at least $15 per volunteer hour.

Due to the positive feedback we received from readers, we’re doing a followup post. So without further ado, here are 10 additional companies which have truly embraced Dollars for Doers programs with generous grants per hour volunteered.

Companies with Volunteer Grants Greater than $15 per hour:

Travelers CompanyTravelers Offers Multiple Types of Employee Donation Programs

Travelers offers two types of employee giving programs.

  1. Matching Gifts of Money
  2. Matching Gifts of Time

Through the “Matching Gifts of Money” program, the company doubles donations made by employees to nearly all nonprofits.

Through the “Matching Gifts of Time” program, the company directs a $500 grant to nonprofit organizations when an employee has volunteered for at least 24 hours with the organization ($20 per hour).

Macy’sMacy's Employees can Have their Donations Doubled and are Rewarded with Grants for Volunteering

Whereas most companies apply very few restrictions to their volunteer grant programs, Macy’s only provides volunteer grants to educational institutions (including K-12). Through Macy’s “Earnings for Learnings” program, the company provides a $250 grant to schools where employees volunteer for at least 15 hours ($17 per hour).

Macy’s also offers a very generous matching gift program where the company will match each employee’s donations up to $22,500 annually to nearly all nonprofits.

Kimberly-ClarkEmployee Giving Programs at Kimberly Clark

While Johnson & Johnson made our 2012 ranking of top corporate employee giving programs, Kimberly-Clark isn’t far behind. The company matches donations to nearly all nonprofits up to $10,000 per employee per year.

The Kimberly-Clark Foundation also recognizes the volunteer efforts of employees and their spouses or domestic partners. The company provides $500 grants to nonprofits where employees / spouses / domestic partners volunteer for at least 30 hours in a year ($17 per hour).

PNC FinancialPNC's Grants for Great Hours

Through PNC’s “Grants for Great Hours” volunteer grant program, employees who volunteer for 40+ hours with a nonprofit early education program earn a grant of $1,000 for that organization ($25 per hour).

Additionally, PNC offers a less restrictive matching gift program where the company matches donations dollar for dollar to nearly every nonprofit and school.

AmgenAmgen Matching and Volunteering Grants

The Amgen Foundation supports volunteer efforts by providing grants to organizations where employees volunteer. Once an Amgen employee volunteers for 15 hours in a year with a nonprofit, he or she can request a $500 grant ($33 per hour).

Full time employees are eligible for up to $2,000 annually in grants for their nonprofit while part time staff can earn up to $1,000 in grants annually.

Amgen also matches employee contributions of up to $20,000 per employee annually to nearly all nonprofits.

PPG IndustriesPPG Grants for Employees and Retirees

PPG Industries offers one of the most generous volunteer grant programs. Through PPG’s “Grant Incentives for Volunteerism by PPG Employees & Retirees (GIVE)” program, after an employee or retiree volunteers for 10 hours with a nonprofit organization, he or she can request a $500 grant for the organization ($50 per hour).

As an added bonus, if an individual also serves on the nonprofit’s board of directors; the company will double the grant and award $1,000 to the nonprofit ($100 per volunteer hour).

PPG Industries also matches donations to select organizations.

Devon EnergyGrants when Devon Energy Employees Volunteer

Whereas most companies base their volunteer grants off the annual number of hours volunteered, Devon Energy provides grants for regular volunteering during shorter time periods.  The company offers two ways employees can request $250 grants ($20 per hour) for their organization:

  1. Six hours of volunteering per month for two months.
  2. Three hours of volunteering per month for four months.

Soros was recently recognized on our list of companies with the top employee giving programs. The company provides volunteer grants of $50 per hour up to $4,000 annually.

Chevron CorporationChevron's Grant for Good

Through Chevron’s “Grant for Good” program, the company provides grants as a way to recognize employees and volunteers who volunteer on a regular basis.

After employees volunteer for 20 hours with a single nonprofit, the organization can receive a $500 grant. Each employee or retiree is eligible to obtain two $500 grants per calendar year for either a single nonprofit or two different nonprofits.

Chevron also doubles donations made by employees and retirees through the company’s Humankind Program.

PfizerEmployee Grant Programs at Pfizer

Pfizer encourages regular volunteerism among employees and retirees. The company provides $1,000 volunteer grants to organizations where employees volunteer on a regular basis.

After an employee or retiree volunteers for six hours per month for six consecutive months, he or she can submit a request for a $1,000 volunteer grant.

The company also matches donations made by employees and retirees up to $5,000 annually.

These Dollar for Doer programs are a chance to double dip. Earn monetary grants along with benefiting from the assistance volunteers can provide. Make sure your nonprofit is encouraging volunteers to log their volunteer hours and submit these grants to their employers.

Raleigh, North Carolina can Double Donations with this List of Companies with Matching Gift Programs

Double the Donation receives requests from nonprofits across the country asking about corporate matching gifts in their area. We decided to create a list of some of those companies in the Raleigh, NC that offer these programs. Nonprofits can double their donations from donors who work for companies offering matching gifts.

At one point the company only matched donations to institutions of higher education but since 2014 rolled out an enhanced matching gift program where John Deere will now match donations to a wide range of 501(c)(3) nonprofits including but not limited to:

Kellogg’s is a nationally recognized brand with employees across the country. The Kellogg company previously match donations on a .5:1 ratio up to $10,000 a year until the middle of 2013. At that time Kellogg’s ended its matching gift program and rolled out its Kellogg’s Cares program.

Through Kellogg’s Cares, the company provides volunteer grants to organizations where employees and retirees volunteer on a regular basis.

Kellogg provides a $100 donation to organizations where an employee or retiree volunteers a minimum of 10 hours during a 12-month period. Each individual is eligible to request up to $500 per year.

LexisNexis will match up to $250 a year to most charitable organizations. Part-time employees are eligible.

New York Matching Gifts

New York Companies with Matching Gift Programs

Since Double the Donation’s nonprofits clients come from across the country, we thought it would be beneficial to highlight a few select matching gift companies in key markets. New York City is the most populated metropolitan area in the country so we decided to highlight this city first.

Like most major markets, New York is home to many large employers who offer matching gift programs. With 45 Fortune 500 companies calling New York home, many employees in the New York metropolitan area work for companies with matching gift or volunteer grant program. If you dig into your organization’s database of corporate donors from the past few years, you’ll notice you received matching gifts from a variety of companies. Some are probably headquartered in your area while others may have a much smaller presence. Here are a few statistics on the New York market that may interest you:

While it’s impossible to dive into details on all of the companies in New York which offer matching gift programs, let’s take a look at some of the area’s largest employers.

Based on the recently published Fortune 500 list, Verizon (#15), JPMorgan Chase (#16), and IBM (#19)  are the three largest companies headquartered in NY and all three offer employee giving programs.

 

Verizon

Verizon Matching GiftsVerizon offers both a matching gift and volunteer grant program for employees. The company matches up to $5,000 to schools and $1,000 to all other nonprofits per employee each year.

Additionally, through the Verizon Volunteer Incentive Program, employees who volunteer for 50 hours in a calendar year can request a $750 grant for an organization.

JPMorgan Chase offers both a matching gift and volunteer grant program. The company matches up to $1,000 per employee or retiree each year to pretty much any school or nonprofit.

The company also offers a tiered volunteer grant program where grants average $10 per hour volunteered. The grant amount varies based upon the number of hours an employee volunteers.

IBM

ibm-matching-giftsIBM also offers multiple types of employee giving programs. Not only does the company offer matching grants on donations and cash grants for volunteering, but IBM allows nonprofits to receive a significantly larger donation if the organization elects to receive IBM technology instead of cash.

For instance, IBM offers a 2:1 technology grant on employee donations which means if an IBM employee donates $500 to your organization, you can receive $1,000 in IBM equipment or $500 in cash.

AIG focuses its philanthropic efforts on three main groups of giving:

  • Safety – auto safety, disease prevention, programs that help prevent improper use of prescription drugs
  • Security – financial and educational programs that drive safety
  • Disaster Relief – including support of disaster preparedness and repair of infrastructure in the wake of a catastrophe

AIG has a matching gift program with a minimum match of $25 and a maximum of $5,000 per employee per year.

Philip Morris (Altria Group)

The company focuses its charitable giving in five areas in particular:

  1. Hunger and extreme poverty
  2. Education
  3. Rural living conditions
  4. Domestic violence
  5. Disaster relief

Philip Morris has a matching gift program in place where the minimum amount matched is $25 and the maximum amount matched is $30,000. It also has a volunteer grant program that allows a $500 grant to be given to an organization after an employee has volunteered a minimum of 25 hours at that organization.

If you’re like most organizations, you probably aren’t maximizing fundraising from matching gift programs. A great place to start is making sure everyone in your organization is familiar with the largest employers in your area.

If you want to take it a step further, consider providing donors and volunteers with detailed information on their company / their spouse’s employer. By raising awareness and making it more convenient for them to submit the grants, you’ll see an increase in fundraising from these sources.

Bottom line: Many of New York’s leading employers match employee donations to nonprofits. Make sure everyone in your organization’s membership and development offices is familiar major employers in your area that match employee donations.
