A great place to start is by looking at the largest companies based in Atlanta.

Coca-Cola Matching Gift LogoCoca-Cola

Coca-Cola offers a very generous employee giving program. The company offers a 2:1 match which means all employee donations are effectively tripled. Coke applies few restrictions on their matching gift program and is willing to match donations to nearly all nonprofits.

Home Depot Matching Gift ProgramHome Depot

As one of the iconic companies based in Atlanta, Home Depot is also a generous supporter of nonprofits in the city. Similar to Coke, the company applies few restrictions on their employee matching gift program and matches donations dollar for dollar.

The company has an easy to use electronic matching gift submission process which means your donors can submit matching gift requests in a matter of minutes. IBM Matching Gift and Volunteer Grant ProgramIBM

IBM matches donations made by both employees and retirees as well as provides grants for volunteering. The matching gift ratio varies depending upon whether it’s an employee or retiree making the donation, as well as whether the nonprofits chooses to receive cash or equipment. For instance:

  • If an IBM employee makes a donation, the nonprofit can choose to receive a 1:1 cash match or a 2:1 equipment match.
  • If an IBM retiree makes a donation, the nonprofit can choose to receive either a .5:1 cash match or a 1:1 equipment match.

The company also offers a significant grant for employees and retirees who volunteer with an organization. The specific amount varies from $1,000 – $3,500 depending upon whether the organization elects to receive a cash or technology grant. Additionally, IBM offers even greater team volunteer grants when groups of IBMers volunteer together.

Delta Matching GiftsDelta Air Lines

Delta matches donations made by employees, retirees, and Board of Directors to a wide range of educational institutions including:

  • Pre-K schools
  • K-12 public and private schools
  • Colleges and universities
  • Post-graduate programs

Delta matches up to $5,000 annually per an eligible individual at a dollar for dollar rate. This is up from a 50% match on up to $2,000 annually just a few years ago.

ATT Matching Gift LogoAT&T

AT&T is the largest provider of mobile and fixed telephone systems in the United States. As of 2016, it is the seventh largest company in the U.S. by total revenue.

While AT&T doesn’t offer a “matching gift program” the company supports the organizations which employees are passionate about through its Cause Cards program.

Cause Cards are grants from the AT&T Foundation given to eligible charities recommended by employees. All employees that participate in the annual Employee Giving Campaign will be eligible to receive a Cause Card.

Eligible nonprofits include:

  • Educational institutions (K-12 and higher education)
  • Arts & cultural organizations
  • Environmental organizations
  • Civic and community organizations
  • Health and human service organizations
  • And many other 501(c)3 organizations

Employee pledges will be eligible for a Cause Card on a sliding scale based on a percentage of total giving. These Cause Cards are expected to range from $25 – $250. Employees will be notified of the value of the Cause Card and the deadline by which they need to redeem it by making a recommendation for an AT&T Foundation grant to an eligible 501(c)(3) charity of their choice.

United Parcel Service (UPS)UPS Matching Gift Program

We get more questions from our nonprofit clients asking us about UPS’s matching gift program than any other company. Unfortunately this confusion arises from the fact that UPS is still listed on the majority of the random lists of matching gift companies found on various websites.

We can assure you that as of 11/17/12, UPS does not offer an employee matching gift program. Our team recently reached out to the UPS Foundation for confirmation and received the following response:

The UPS Foundation formerly offered a gift matching program for educational and cultural organizations.  However, on February 20, 2009, UPS’s Board of Trustees approved the action to suspend the Gift Matching Program due to the economic climate.   At this time, there are no current plans to restart the program.

Equifax

Equifax matches employee donations up to $5,000 per year to nearly all 501(c)(3) organizations. While the company provided us with a copy of the paper form which employees use to submit the matching gift request, we always encourage employees to check the company intranet to ensure it’s the most up-to-date version.

Birmingham Matching Gift Corporations

Many large corporations call Birmingham home. These companies’ matching gift programs can make a difference for your nonprofit. Even though The University of Alabama Birmingham is the largest employer in the city the region is also known for its major banks and has a wide variety of Fortune 500 employers. IBM

IBM offers a generous matching program for with benefits for employees and retirees. The company will match donations from employees at a 1:1 ratio, or donate twice as much in IBM equipment. The company will match up to $5,000 per employee each year.

PNC Bank

PNC matches donations made by employees between $50 and $2,500. Unfortunately though the program is only open to full-time employees. Retirees and part-time workers are not eligible. PNC matches donations made to a variety of nonprofits.

Regions Financial

Regions Financial, one of the largest banks in the Birmingham area, matches donations made by full and part-time employees to a wide variety of nonprofits. Each employee can request a match on donations between $25 and $1,000 annually.

Vulcan

Vulcan offers a matching gift program to allow its employees to give back to the community. The company will match up to $10,000 in donations per employee at a 1:1 ratio to most organizations. But it gets even better. Donations made to educational institutions are matched at a 2:1 ratio.

Directing Donors to Matching Gift Forms | 4 Standard Methods

Does your organization have a strategy in place to maximize fundraising from employee matching gift programs? If not, taking donors and members to company specific matching gift forms is a great place to start.

Directing donors and members directly to matching gift forms is far more effective than suggesting they “reach out to HR”. In fact, it’s one of the most effective ways your organization can increase fundraising from corporate matching gift programs.

At Double the Donation, we utilize four different approaches to directing your organizations donors and members to the forms they need to submit matching gift requests. We know each method isn’t created equal, so we’ve prioritized the information we provide to donors to maximize the likelihood they’ll submit a matching gift request.

Direct Donors to the Electronic Matching Gift Submission Process (1st Preference)

Many of the largest companies offer an electronic matching gift submission process. While a few companies have developed their own proprietary process, the majority of companies contract the matching gift administration process out to a vendor (ex. Easymatch, Cybergrant, etc.)

Fortunately for nonprofits, in the majority of instances the electronic login page is actually publicly available on a website which anyone can access. We direct donors to the login page where they enter their username and password and then proceed through the matching gift submission process.

Rationale: Your donors are already online and looking for company specific matching gift information. They’re most likely to submit a match request electronically, especially since once at the proper location, it only takes a few minutes.

Link to the company’s matching gift website where forms are located  (2nd Preference)

While more and more companies continue to migrate over to an electronic submission process, many still require donors to print out / fill out a paper matching gift form. In many cases the form is posted out on a publicly accessible website so we direct donors to the company page where the matching form can be downloaded.

The two possible approaches were for us to download these forms and host them on Double the Donation’s servers or direct donors to the actual company page where the forms are hosted. After testing both strategies, we ultimately decided on the latter

Rationale: While directing donors to a company page to download the form involves an extra step, we see it as the preferred method for providing donors with the form. It ensures they have access to the most up-to-date form as well as reassures them the matching program is still active form.

Provide Donors with the Matching Gift Form on our Servers – (3rd Preference)

If a company requires employees to submit a paper matching gift form, we do our best to provide the donor with a copy of the form. If it isn’t posted publicly on the company’s website, we request that the company provide us with a copy of the form.

In these cases we host the form on our server (typically as a PDF) so your donors can easily download it.

Rationale: Providing a copy of the form enables a donor to submit the matching gift request without having to dig around for additional information.

Redirect Donors to the Company Intranet or HR / Community Relations Contact

Unfortunately we don’t always have the best access to the matching gift forms your donors need. Typically this is for one of the following two reasons:

  1. There’s an electronic submission process which can only be accessed over the company intranet.
  2. The form is posted on the company intranet, but the company didn’t want to share a copy with Double the Donation.

In these cases we typically redirect donors to the company intranet. If it’s an online submission process, we notify the donor of this and ask them to go to a specific location on the intranet or to search for “matching gifts.” If there’s a paper form, we provide it via a link or host the form on our servers.

Rationale: While this is less than ideal, just telling donors “Hey, company XYZ will match your donation up to $5,000 and your organization is eligible” increases the likelihood they’ll log into the company intranet to retrieve the form.
