Home Depot Matching Gift ProgramHome Depot

As one of the iconic companies based in Atlanta, Home Depot is also a generous supporter of nonprofits in the city. Similar to Coke, the company applies few restrictions on their employee matching gift program and matches donations dollar for dollar.

The company has an easy to use electronic matching gift submission process which means your donors can submit matching gift requests in a matter of minutes. IBM Matching Gift and Volunteer Grant ProgramIBM

IBM matches donations made by both employees and retirees as well as provides grants for volunteering. The matching gift ratio varies depending upon whether it’s an employee or retiree making the donation, as well as whether the nonprofits chooses to receive cash or equipment. For instance:

  • If an IBM employee makes a donation, the nonprofit can choose to receive a 1:1 cash match or a 2:1 equipment match.
  • If an IBM retiree makes a donation, the nonprofit can choose to receive either a .5:1 cash match or a 1:1 equipment match.

The company also offers a significant grant for employees and retirees who volunteer with an organization. The specific amount varies from $1,000 – $3,500 depending upon whether the organization elects to receive a cash or technology grant. Additionally, IBM offers even greater team volunteer grants when groups of IBMers volunteer together.

Delta Matching GiftsDelta Air Lines

Delta matches donations made by employees, retirees, and Board of Directors to a wide range of educational institutions including:

  • Pre-K schools
  • K-12 public and private schools
  • Colleges and universities
  • Post-graduate programs

Delta matches up to $5,000 annually per an eligible individual at a dollar for dollar rate. This is up from a 50% match on up to $2,000 annually just a few years ago.

ATT Matching Gift LogoAT&T

AT&T is the largest provider of mobile and fixed telephone systems in the United States. As of 2016, it is the seventh largest company in the U.S. by total revenue.

While AT&T doesn’t offer a “matching gift program” the company supports the organizations which employees are passionate about through its Cause Cards program.

Cause Cards are grants from the AT&T Foundation given to eligible charities recommended by employees. All employees that participate in the annual Employee Giving Campaign will be eligible to receive a Cause Card.

Eligible nonprofits include:

  • Educational institutions (K-12 and higher education)
  • Arts & cultural organizations
  • Environmental organizations
  • Civic and community organizations
  • Health and human service organizations
  • And many other 501(c)3 organizations

Employee pledges will be eligible for a Cause Card on a sliding scale based on a percentage of total giving. These Cause Cards are expected to range from $25 – $250. Employees will be notified of the value of the Cause Card and the deadline by which they need to redeem it by making a recommendation for an AT&T Foundation grant to an eligible 501(c)(3) charity of their choice.

United Parcel Service (UPS)UPS Matching Gift Program

We get more questions from our nonprofit clients asking us about UPS’s matching gift program than any other company. Unfortunately this confusion arises from the fact that UPS is still listed on the majority of the random lists of matching gift companies found on various websites.

We can assure you that as of 11/17/12, UPS does not offer an employee matching gift program. Our team recently reached out to the UPS Foundation for confirmation and received the following response:

The UPS Foundation formerly offered a gift matching program for educational and cultural organizations.  However, on February 20, 2009, UPS’s Board of Trustees approved the action to suspend the Gift Matching Program due to the economic climate.   At this time, there are no current plans to restart the program.

Equifax matches employee donations up to $5,000 per year to nearly all 501(c)(3) organizations. While the company provided us with a copy of the paper form which employees use to submit the matching gift request, we always encourage employees to check the company intranet to ensure it’s the most up-to-date version.

This means that a company will match all of the funds raised by an employee for a fundraising activity, including walks, runs, and/or biking events.

Companies Matching Employee Fundraising Efforts for Walk, Run, and Bike Type of Events:

Intuit, Inc.intuit blue

Intuit is a software company that develops financial and tax preparation software. It has 8,500 employees and offers a comprehensive matching gift program to its employees.

Intuit’s matching gift program includes an individual match, in which the company will match an employee’s donation of up to $2,000 to a nonprofit organization or educational institution of his or her choosing. In addition, Intuit’s corporate giving programs include a fundraising match. Intuit matches all of the money personally raised by an employee for a fundraising event.

There is a combined $2,000 maximum match (for both individual and fundraising matches) per employee every year.

McAfee, the world’s largest security technology company, is a computer security software organization located in California that was recently acquired by Intel.

McAfee offers both individual matches (at a 1:1 ratio), and fundraising matches (also at a 1:1 ratio).

There is a combined $1,000 company matching limit per employee.

British Petroleum (BP)matching-donations-bp

BP, the fifth-largest company in the world by revenue, is an international oil and gas company headquartered in London.  BP employs nearly 80,000 people across the world with a large presence in the United States.

BP’s employee grant programs include the traditional personal donation matches, as well as matches for money raised from employees’ friends and family members. BP will match a maximum of $5,000 per employee, per year.

State Street Corporationstate street

State Street is a financial services holding company that was founded back in 1792 in Boston. After many years of successful growth, the company now employs more than 30,000 people internationally.

State Street offers a matching gift program for employee donations called GiveMore, which matches at a 1:1 ratio. Within this program, annual matching limits are extremely generous but also vary by role:

  • Board of Directors, CEO, President and Vice Chairs can receive up to $35,000 in matching funds.
  • Executive Vice Presidents can receive up to $25,000.
  • Senior Vice Presidents can receive up to $15,000.
  • All other employees can receive up to $5,000 in matching funds.

State Street also offers a fundraising match program called CollectMore, where the company will match an employee’s fulfilled fundraising pledges. Limits in the CollectMore program are lower, but nonetheless, being able to have funds matched is an incredible benefit for employees participating in a fundraising walk, bike, or ride type of event.

Penguin Random House:

Penguin Random House matches employee donations of up to $2,500 per employee per year to most 501(c)(3) nonprofits.

To sweeten their program even further, Penguin Random House has a Fundraising Match Program where the company will match up to $1,500 per employee (included in the $2,500 per employee annual maximum), per calendar year, for money raised personally by employees for fundraising events to qualifying nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) tax exempt status.

Types of fundraising events include, but are not limited to, walk-a-thons, bike-a-thons, and 5K’s to name a few. Each fundraising request will be considered on a case by case basis.

Small Companies Matching Gifts

Companies that Match PAC Fundraising Donations

Companies give to nonprofits in many ways, and one of the most popular methods is through matching gifts. While matching gifts are generally given when an employee donates to a nonprofit, companies are finding new ways to support the causes that employees care about.

Companies and employees have political interests that can be funded by Political Action Committees (PAC). The problem for companies is that the Federal Election Committee (FEC) does not allow businesses to fund their own PACs. Employees can donate to company PACs, but employers cannot force them to give.

In an effort to increase political donations, companies have incentivized employee giving to PACs. Companies will match employee donations to company PACs, and the matching gifts will go to the nonprofit of the employee’s choice.

For example, Bilbo works for Boeing and makes a $500 donation to Boeing’s PAC. Since the company runs a matching gift program for PAC donations that matches 0.5:1, Boeing writes a $250 check of its own and gives it to the nonprofit of Bilbo’s choosing. The Boeing PAC receives $500, and Bilbo’s favorite nonprofit gets a gift, too.

Donations to nonprofits that are the result of matching gifts from PAC donations are not eligible for tax exemptions for the company or the employee. Federal law limits annual PAC donations to $5,000 per employee.

In 2011, Coca-Cola’s PAC gave $148,000 to charities. In 2012, that number increased to $217,000 and $263,000 in 2013, the last year data is publicly available. As more employees learn about the PAC program and donate, more nonprofits receive financial benefits. PACs are a way for Coca-Cola to help employees to support both the political initiatives they care about and their favorite nonprofits all at the same time.

Coke matches PAC donations dollar-for-dollar, and their PAC match program aims to help nonprofits that focus on:

  • Environment
  • Well-being
  • Community involvement

Like many companies that operate PACs, Coca-Cola willingly discloses its annual PAC matching program finances, although the FEC does not require this information in reports that companies submit.

 

Hewlett-PackardHP logo

PAC matching gift programs have been around since the 1980’s, but Hewlett-Packard joined the game in 2010.

Hewlett-Packard’s Political Action Committee (HP PAC) matches donations as follows:

  • Dollar-for-dollar matches
  • Gives matching donations to charities or educational institutions
  • Employees must give at least $2,500 to receive a matching gift

American ExpressAmerican Express logo

American Express believes that active engagement in public policy is an important piece of corporate citizenship. They seek to support policy issues that affect:

  • Consumer financial laws and regulations
  • Merchant pricing
  • Privacy/data security
  • Taxation
  • Other issues

American Express does not contribute to presidential campaigns. Political goals and the types of campaigns that PACs donate to vary by company. Every company has its own criteria for determining what political endeavors to support.

American Express gives political contributions according to:

  • Views of a candidate about topics important to American Express
  • Position of a candidate within a committee with jurisdiction over policies important to American Express
  • How a candidate represents an area where American Express has an employee presence
  • Leadership position of an elected candidate

PACs are designed to support company political ambitions. They’re supported by employees, but companies ultimately decide where the money goes.

 

Boeing

Politicians can soar to new heights thanks to donations from the Boeing Political Action Committee (BPAC).

BPAC eligible employees:

  • Receive 0.5:1 matches for PAC donations.
  • Receive matching donations from Boeing up to $5,000 (a maximum $2,500 matching gift).
  • Employees may request funds to the following types of U.S. based 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations:
    • Arts & Culture
    • Civic
    • Educational Institutions
    • Environmental Organizations
    • Health & Human Services
    • Religious organizations that have a 501(c)(3) in their own name

Boeing employees must give at least $100 in order for a PAC gift to be matched. Eligible employees may select up to four nonprofits and designate what percentage of the matching gift that each receives.

Many company PACs state that the money that employees donate goes to support political initiatives that support both the business and the employees, and Pfizer is no different. The Pfizer PAC controls what the donated money goes towards, which means that donors relinquish the right to specify what candidates or causes their money benefits. Giving to the PAC is an employee helping Pfizer to forward its own political ambitions, so donors want to make sure that those goals are in line with their own interests.

Pfizer has a policy for how employees may participate in politics, both in terms of money and service, during working hours. Many companies have such outlines, as donations of time and service to political organizations may be viewed as types of political contributions directly from the company, which are not allowed. The specifics of how employees may engage political organizations varies by company.

WalmartWalmart logo

There are companies that provide employee benefits in return for PAC contributions, and then there’s Walmart. Not only does Walmart match PAC donations with generous 2:1 matches, but those matching gifts go to the company’s Associates in Critical Need Trust (ACNT). The ACNT helps employees in times of need.

Walmart’s PAC donation program is only for company executives. Low-level Walmart employees are not expected or permitted to donate to the PAC. In this way, higher-level Walmart employees support Walmart’s political ambitions while giving money to ACNT, and thus they help out their Walmart peers.

Most company PACs only accept donations from certain employees, and those employees are generally higher up in the companies. It’s important for many companies to get as much of their upper management to donate as possible, as full support for the PAC demonstrates a belief in what companies such as Walmart do and their integrity as businesses with a better world in mind.

Many nonprofit organizations have a Board of Directors that make annual monetary contributions. Did you know that certain companies offer bonus matches or higher ratios and limits on matching gifts if their employees serve on nonprofit boards?

Here are some of these companies that offer higher limits on matching gifts from board members:

U.S. Companies Corporate Giving Policies

US Bancorp is the parent company of U.S. Bank National Association (based in Minneapolis, Minnesota), ranked the fifth largest bank in the U.S. based on assets ($364 billion), and fourth largest based on total branches. The company employs over 64,000 people.

US Bancorp/US Bank Matching Gift Policy

US Bank offers a 1:1 matching ratio of gifts up to $1,000 by all employees. When a board member makes a donation, this limit is raised to $3,000 (still a 1:1 match ratio). US Bank matches donations to most nonprofit organizations.

MWV

MeadWestvaco Corporation (MWV)

MWV is an American packaging company based in Richmond, Virginia. It has approximately 23,000 employees.

MWV Matching Gift Policy

MWV matches all employee donations up to $2,500 to education institutions (K-12 included). It also matches donations from employees who serve on the board of directors (or other governing body) of the organization to which the contribution is being made.

DominionDominion Resources, Inc.

Dominion Resources, Inc. (aka Dominion), is a power and energy company headquartered in Richmond, Virginia that supplies electricity in parts of Virginia and North Carolina, and supplies natural gas to parts of West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and eastern North Carolina. As of 2012, Dominion employed 15,500 people.

Dominion Matching Gift Policy

When Dominion employees or retirees serve on the board of directors for a nonprofit organization, Dominion will make a 2:1 match up to $2,500. So, if the employee donated $2,500, Dominion will make a $5,000 donation, totaling $7,500!

PNM Resources

PNM Resources, headquartered in Albuquerque, New Mexico, serves electricity to 498,000 homes and business in northern New Mexico and parts of west Texas. PNM employs about 2,000 people.

PNM’s Volunteer Grant Program

PNM provides 3 different levels of monetary grants for volunteer service provided by an employee:

  1. For every 12 volunteer hours donated, PNM will provide a $100 donation to an eligible nonprofit organization.
  2. For every 25 volunteer hours, PNM will provide a $300 donation.
  3. If an employee volunteers at least 25 hours AND serves on the nonprofit’s board of directors, PNM will provide a $500 donation.

BSOCBlue Shield of California

With 4,500 employees, Blue Shield of California is based in San Francisco. It is a nonprofit health plan provider that serves more than 3.4 million health plan members and almost 65,000 physicians across California.

BSOC Volunteer Grant Program

Healthcare Organizations:

When a BSOC employee volunteers at a healthcare organization and makes a monetary donation up to $3,000, BSOC will match the donation at a 2:1 ratio, effectively making the total donation $9,000! When a BSOC employee serves on the nonprofit’s organization governing board and makes a monetary donation up to $5,000, BSOC will also match the donation at a 2:1 ratio, totaling $15,000!

Civic and Community Organizations:

BSOC employee volunteers at civic and community organizations can have donations of $1,500 matched at a 1:1 ratio. BSOC employee volunteers who are on the governing body of these organizations can have donations up to $2,500 matched at a 1:1 ratio.

SchneiderSchneider Electric, Square D NOAD & Subsidiaries

Schneider Electric is a France-based multinational corporation with nearly 10 U.S. business acquisitions that specializes in electricity distribution and automation management. It employs more than 152,000 people as of 2012.

Schneider Electric Matching Gift Policy

Schneider Electric, Square D NOAD & its subsidiaries provide a 1:1 match on all donations up to $10,000! If an employee is also an active member of a nonprofit organization’s board of directors, the match ratio is increased to a 1.5:1 ratio (that would total a $25,000 donation for a board member!)

TakedaTakeda Pharmaceuticals Inc.

Takeda is the largest pharmaceutical company in Japan and Asia, boasting 30,000 employees worldwide. It is focused on metabolic disorders, gastroenterology, neurology, and inflammation. Despite being headquartered in Osaka, Japan, Fortune Magazine ranked the Takeda Oncology Company as one the 100 best companies to work for in the United States in January 2012.

Takeda Volunteer Grant Program

When an employee of Takeda Pharmaceuticals serves on the board of directors for eligible nonprofit organizations, said employee can request a $2,500 volunteer grant for the organization.

Novartis is a Swiss multinational pharmaceutical company based in Basel, Switzerland. In 2010 it ranked number two among the worldwide pharmaceutical industry in sales ($46.8 billion). Novartis employs nearly 120,000 people.

Novartis Volunteer Grant Program

Novartis offers three types of volunteer grants:

  1. Individual Volunteer Grants: employees who volunteer at least 40 hours with an eligible nonprofit organization can request a $250 volunteer grant.
  2. Board Service Grants: employees who serve on the board of directors of an eligible organization can request a $750 volunteer grant after one year of board service. These grants are renewable every year for up to three years.
  3. Team Volunteer Grants: when five or more employees volunteer as a team on a special project for an eligible nonprofit, Novartis will donate $500 to the organization. (This is exclusive of Community Partnership Day.)

Companies that Match Gifts to Elementary Schools

At Double the Donation, we frequently receive questions about which companies match gifts to specific nonprofit categories. We previously covered matching gifts at high schools and higher education institutions, but elementary schools and foundations are also major recipients.

It’s well known that almost all companies with matching gifts will match to higher education, but the policies can be confusing in regards to K-12 schools. In this article we highlight a few companies that make a major impact on elementary school education by matching donations from employees.

Corporate Matching Gifts for Elementary Schools

Elementary schools have a lot to gain from corporate matching. HP, for instance, allows employees to support organizations with HP technology. The HP employee contributes 25% of the equipment’s list price and the remaining 75% is matched by the company. Thus a $1,000 donation from a parent would be worth $4,000 in equipment. A single donation like this could update and replace many library or classroom computers.

Companies love being seen as supporters of their local elementary schools and there’s no better way than matching donations from employees. Not only does Texas Instruments make many of the technologies used in classrooms, it also supports elementary schools with its matching gift program. Additionally, TI stands out for doing a great job notifying employees and retirees of its programs.

The company matches donations of between $50 and $10,000 per employee each year. As an added benefit, Texas Instruments also matches donations from retirees as well as offers grants of up to $1,000 when employees or retirees volunteer regularly.

The Walt Disney Corporation

The Walt Disney Company will match donations to elementary schools made by current full-time employees, part-time employees, and retirees of between $25 and $15,000 annually. The company matches to all K-12 schools.

If a Walt Disney employee also volunteers with a school, the company will provide a grant of up to $1,000 as a way to recognize the volunteerism.

While every company’s matching gift guidelines is different, each company normally addresses the matching gift eligibility of religious based organizations. For instance:

American Express

American Express matches donations to most 501(c)(3) organizations. In fact, the company will even match select donations at a 2:1 ratio if an employee also serves on the nonprofit’s board or volunteers for over 50 hours in a year.

Here’s what American Express says about houses of worship in their matching gift guidelines:

Question: Are houses of worship eligible organizations?

Answer: No, gifts to houses of worship (churches, synagogues, etc.) will not be matched. However, the program will match a gift to an ongoing and independently-run program affiliated with a religious organization, if the gift is restricted to a nonsectarian project that provides needed social services to the community at large on a nondiscriminatory basis without any religious teaching, directive or requirements to receive services (e.g. a soup kitchen, a homeless shelter, a food bank, etc.).

General Electric

Fun fact, in 1954 GE was the first company to offer an employee matching gift program. At the time GE only matched to higher education but has since expanded their matching to encompass most schools and nonprofits.

Here’s what GE’s guidelines have to say about whether churches, synagogues, mosques, and other houses of worship are eligible for matching gift funds.

Religious organizations (churches, synagogues, mosques and other houses of worship), or other organizations primarily promoting religious purposes. Other faith-based community service organizations or schools may be considered eligible if their programs:

  1. are open to all individuals in the community regardless of religious belief;
  2. serve a secular purpose, such as food pantry, homeless shelter or education;
  3. do not require participation in prayer, worship or other religious activities as a condition of receiving service(s) offered; and
  4. do not use the individual donation or resulting match for religious purposes.

DirecTV Group

DirectTV has one of the most generous employee giving programs! The company matches employee donations up to $20,000 annually as well as provides a grant of $250 after an employee volunteers for 25 hours in a year. Like most companies, DirecTV provides a detailed match policy.

Here’s what DirecTV says about matches to religious organizations:

Gifts made to religious organizations (DIRECTV will match gifts to qualified institutions
affiliated with religious organizations, but will not match gifts made directly to religious
organizations).

DirectTV will not contribute matching funds to churches and religious organizations which fulfill tithes, pledges or other church‐related financial commitments.

DirecTV will not contribute matching funds to institutions that restrict admission or aid due to race or religious beliefs.

The Pew Charitable Trusts

The Pew Charitiable Trusts program provides a 2:1 match on employee donations up to $10,000 annually (meaning a $20,000 match).

Chevron

Chevron matches donations from employees and retirees as well as offers grants to nonprofits when employees and retirees volunteer.

Here’s what Chevron says about matching to faith based organizations:

Parts of churches and private schools. Chevron Humankind will provide matching funds and grants to
programs operated by faith-based organizations if those programs: (a) are open to all individuals in the
community regardless of religious belief; (b) serve a secular purpose, such as a food pantry or a
homeless shelter; and (c) do not require participants to join in religious worship as a condition of receiving

In our previous article on standard elements outlined in corporate matching gift guidelines, we addressed some of the basic eligibility criteria for matching gift programs.

In general, companies match to either all 501(c)(3) nonprofits and schools or place certain restrictions on the types of organizations eligible.

When it comes to donations to churches, synagogues, temples, and other religious or faith based organizations, the general rule of thumb is that if an organization provides social services to the greater community or is a K-12 school, those donations are match eligible.

The easiest way to determine whether our matching gift service would be beneficial is to look over your donation records. If you’ve received matching gifts from companies in the past, there’s a good chance your organization meets the general eligibility requirements.

Many nonprofits in Canada have asked Double the Donation if there are companies inside Canada that will match donations.

Fortunately Double the Donation tracks both U.S. and Canadian companies that match employee donations.

As expected, many Fortune 500 companies have a global presence, and are found throughout Canada. Many of these large corporations have matching gift programs; however the policies can vary between countries.

With the 11th largest economy in the world, Canada headquarters many great companies with generous employee giving benefits. Many Canadian companies have a long history of philanthropy and some of the world’s renowned nonprofits call Canada home.

Bank of Montreal (also known as BMO Financial) matches gifts between $100 and $2,000 per employee every year. They match to a variety of institutions ranging from K-12 schools to arts and cultural organizations to environmental groups.

BMO also provides grants when employees volunteer regularly.

Bell Canada Enterprises does not offer a matching gift program, but they do have employee volunteer grants. Employees who volunteer throughout the year can earn up to $500 annually for their favorite nonprofits.

Headquartered in Montreal, Gildan will match gifts from both full and part-time employees. The company match to organizations in Canada, the United States, and Honduras.

Royal Bank of CanadaRBC

RBC or The Royal Bank of Canada will match employee donations. The maximum amount matched is $1,000. A cool perk of RBC’s matching gift program is that retirees are also eligible to participate and have their donations matched.

TransCanadaTransCanada Matching Gift and Dollars for Doers Programs

TransCanada offers two main types of employee giving programs.

The first is TransCanada’s matching gift program where the company matches up to $1,000 annually to most nonprofits. The program is open to all employees and many retirees.

The second program is TransCanada’s Dollars for Doers program. Through this program the company matches donations of time with monetary grants. Once a TransCanada employee volunteers for at least 20 hours in a calendar year he or she can request a volunteer grant for the organization.

As the nation’s capital, Washington D.C. has a large variety of non-profits and corporate offices. Consequently, there are numerous opportunities for non-profits to take advantage of matching gift programs and volunteer grants.

Statistics on DC Matching Gift Companies

From a non-profit’s standpoint, DC is one of the best cities to headquarter. The presence of the Federal government allows for major funding opportunities for a variety of organizations.

Additionally, they provide volunteer grants up to $500 for 100 hours of volunteer service, which sets it apart from other corporations.

Verizon is another large company in the DC area. They offer a matching gift program that provides up to $5,000 for any education-related non-profit and up to $1,000 for other types of non-profits. The matching gift program is available to all current and former employees.

Verizon also offers volunteer grants of up to $750 for employees who volunteer for a total of 50 hours.

Booz Allen Hamilton Consulting
